As a part of Scene and Heard series, we are happy to present The Collaborative Process of Composing for Film with Janal Bechtold!

Designed with both filmmakers and music creatives in mind, this interactive workshop will explore the power and process of telling stories with music. Screen composer Janal Bechthold will show you how to unlock the right musical approach for your film, finding a common language between filmmakers and composers, working collaboratively, and how to avoid common pitfalls. Attendees will take away a better understanding of the step by step process behind crafting a score, navigating the industry, business practices, and how to find your next team.

Janal Bechthold

Janal Bechthold is a composer for film, TV, games, and interactive media, having worked on numerous scores including feature film Art of Obsession, documentary Gods In Shackles, videogame The Rival Books of Aster, and interactive graphic novels, Dystopia 2153 and 80 Degrees North. Her music for television has been broadcast in programs such as Daily Planet, Marilyn Dennis Show, The Social, CTV Morning, and on PBS, CBC/SRC-Radio Canada, CTV, TSN, Discovery, and TV5 international among others and has had films screen at prestigious festivals such as Hot Docs International Film Festival, Cannes Short Film Corner, FIN Atlantic International Film Festival, LA Shorts, and at both the United Nations and the Supreme Court of India.

Janal is the 2nd Vice President of the Screen Composers Guild of Canada, chairs the SCGC’s Women Composer Advisory Council, serves on the board of the SOCAN Foundation, and holds membership in The Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television, Alliance of Women Film Composers, Interactive Ontario, and Women in Film & Television (WIFT-T).
