With a legacy of comedic talent, Canada is stepping up with a new generation of creators who are taking over the screen. Learn more about the business of being funny by some of the leading directors, writers and actors in the industry, and the new innovative approaches they have adopted to bring their shows beyond television screens.

This panel will feature Cynthia Knight (Mohawk Girls, Sophie), Jordan Canning (Baroness von Sketch, Schitt’s Creek), Juno Rinaldi (Workin’ Moms, How to Buy a Baby), and Susan Kent (This Hour Has 22 Minutes).

Cynthia Knight

A graduate of the Canadian Film Centre’s Television Writers’ Program and a former development executive for Muse Entertainment and Attraction Images, Cynthia Knight is a writer, story editor and showrunner with such credits as the CBC comedy Sophie, CityTV’s The Beat and showrunner on Mohawk Girls for all 5 seasons.

Jordan Canning

Jordan Canning has directed more than a dozen short films which have played at festivals all over the world, including the Tribeca Film Festival, TIFF, Interfilm Berlin and Cannes (Telefilm’s Not Short on Talent program). Among them she won a number of awards including a Golden Sheaf for Best Director, 2012 TIFF RBC Emerging Filmmakers Competition and the Shaw Media Fearless Female Director Award. Jordan directed all episodes of the CTV digital series Space Riders: Division Earth. The show won the 2014 Canadian Screen Award for Best Digital Series and four Canadian Comedy Awards, including Best Director. Her first feature, We Were Wolves, premiered at the 2014 TIFF. Her second feature, Suck It Up, premiered at Slamdance 2017 and won Best Feature Film at the B3 Frankfurt Biennale. Her third feature, an omnibus film called Ordinary Days, won Best Director at the 2018 Canadian Film Festival.

She has directed on numerous television series, including Saving Hope (CTV), The Detail (CTV), Burden of Truth (The CW),This Hour Has 22 Minutes (CBC), Baroness Von Sketch Show (IFC), Little Dog (CBC) and Schitt’s Creek (CBC/PopTV).

Juno Rinaldi

Known for her role as 'Frankie' in the CBC comedy series Workin' Moms, Juno Rinaldi is an award-winning playwright and actor, and co-founder of the darkly comedic comedy troupe, Theatre Melee. Currently shooting the third season of Workin' Moms, Rinaldi's recent credits include a new HULU series as well as the new Amazon series Wayne, from the writers of Deadpool. As a filmmaker, Rinaldi recently shot Dove, a short film she also wrote and in which she stars. In 2017, Rinaldi and actor Shaun Smyth launched the Hamilton Film Centre - a school designed to teach acting for the camera for all ages.

Vicki Murphy

MODERATOR
Vicki Murphy is the voice behind MotherFumbler – an award-winning blog turned book (Breakwater Books, 2014). Her irreverent rants about parenting have appeared on CBC.ca, The Huffington Post, and The Overcast, but her greatest claim to fame is referring to her vagina as her WOOKIEE BUSH during an interview on CBC radio. She is an advertising creative director at m5 where she likes to use her creativity for good – including helping the homeless, and advancing women’s issues. She is new to the SJIWFF board and hopes to do some good there too.
